“There can be no music without ideology.” D. Shostakovich
For the third season of the successful concert series, the audience has chosen the composer Dmitri Shostakovich. During three concerts, Shostakovich's most beautiful chamber music will be performed by Dutch and international top musicians in the beautiful acoustics of the Lutheran Church in Groningen.
One of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century, Shostakovich wrote many phenomenal chamber music works. Oppressed by the totalitarian regime, he was censored and the conflict between his own style and the music he was expected to write can be heard in these pieces. “Shostakovich balanced between meeting other people's demands and his own modernist approach. Between patriotism and the urge for freedom.” (the concert hall) His compositions form a rich palette of diverse moods: from melancholy to carefree, reflective to sarcastic and sometimes all these nuances emerge at the same time.
For the second concert of the series, the Chloe Piano Trio will will showcase the two piano trios and the 7 Romances on poems by Alexander Blok for soprano and trio.
Come and experience an unforgettable evening with Shostakovich's intense and layered chamber music, in which intimate sounds and powerful emotions alternate in masterful compositions!
